🚧Take a Walk Through History or How About A 75-foot high Disposal Cell?
Weldon Spring Site Interpretive Center Project Tour
Presented by SLC3
Ready to mix science, history, engineering, and a stunning view? Join us for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Weldon Spring Site Interpretive Center—where mid-century munitions, Cold War cleanup, and prairie restoration all collide in one unforgettable facility.
Once the home of explosives and uranium processing, this 150-acre campus has undergone a complete transformation. Now? It’s a nationally-recognized U.S. Department of Energy legacy site, a high-tech educational hub, and a showcase of environmental stewardship.
What You’ll See on the Tour:
🏗️ 22,000 sq. ft. Interpretive Center designed by KdG (now part of Shive-Hattery)—includes:
- A 5,000 sq. ft. exhibit hall loaded with Cold War and WWII-era artifacts
- Four classrooms and outdoor teaching areas for future scientists and history buffs
- A 100-seat auditorium for lectures, tours, and story-swapping
- Admin/support offices, labs, locker rooms—even a maintenance garage with a two-bay shop
🌾 Eight acres of native gardens, buzzing with pollinators, and home to some truly Instagram-worthy prairie views.
🚶♂️ A 75-ft tall, 41-acre disposal cell (yep, the giant mound) you can climb via stairs to score panoramic views of St. Charles and St. Louis Counties. It’s a literal high point—and a massive engineering feat.
🧠Interpretive exhibits that walk you through how the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and DOE transformed a once-contaminated site into a model of sustainability and legacy management.
This is not your average government facility—and this tour isn’t your typical hard-hat walk-through. You’ll get the full story of how this site was decontaminated, redesigned, and rebuilt for education, exploration, and environmental pride.
